Yogabugs and Yoga for Older Children

Don't worry, not everyone's as bendy as Iona..... Unless you're a piece of spaghetti that is!

Yoga for older Children (approx 8yrs and above)

In India yoga has been used as an integral part of the system of education of  many children for years. Nowadays the stresses of growing up in such a fast paced society often means that children face a much more challenging childhood than we did just a few decades ago....So the UK is now catching on to the idea of special time and techniques for relaxation being of utmost importance for both  the child and adult's peace of mind state of wellbeing.

Classical Yoga encourages self-discipline, self knowledge and increases physical health, wellbeing and the ability to concentrate and assimilate information, as well opening up the creative imagination, but most importantly it enables children to stay in touch with their natural state of Joy, happiness and self acceptance and helps to train the body to eventually sit still for some quiet time to  connect with their true spirit, whatever that means to them. Sometimes this can be expressed by spending time with God or the spirit of nature. Visualisation is often used for example, imagining they have a sunshine in their heart, or that they are brave like a lion etc.

'Twinkle Twinkle little star how I wonder.....'

Yogabugs for 'shiny little stars' (3-7yrs approx)

For the younger children YogaBugs Classes are a fun and exciting way for children to be introduced to the Benefits of Yoga. Different classes are designed for  aged children ranging from 3-7 yrs old, and more classical Yoga classes for older kids are also available. In a yogabugs class, the Children are lead through creative stories and adventures which stimulate their imagination and help to maintain their natural flexibility. Classes include breathing techniques, safe postures, stretches back arches, twists and balances which combine to support and strengthen children physically and mentally, by building self confidence in them, improving their concentration and helping them towards better sleep patterns. And the main thing is it's all great fun and most kids are natural 'yogis and yoginis' as it is their true nature to be joyful and light.

Depending on the age group being taught, it also aims time to create a safe and accepting space for 'quiet time' in which they can become aware of how they are feeling. Obviously with the 'very little ones' this time is sometimes limited due to them  sometimes having ants in their pants!!

The classes promote a happy, accepting space for self expression, and aim to steer clear of shouting at or telling children that they are wrong for expressing themselves naturally. This way every child can learn more about their own personality and learn to channel their own unique energy accordingly. Yoga is not a sport yet can enhance the use of energy, flexibility and movement within the practice of sport, bringing co-ordination to mind and body whilst also bring positive affirmation to spirit.

YogaBugs classes are available to schools and nurseries either as a daytime or PPA time filling activity or after school club. Classes usually last between 30-60 mins depending on age group.
